Winter weather brings a unique set of challenges for boaters at Cedar Creek Lake. While area lakes are not frozen like in the north, the water is still cold enough to cause problems if a mishap occurs. Whether fishing or observing local wildlife, water safety is always important for owners of a Harbor Light Villas home and their guests.

Greg Akins, Aquatic Training Specialist with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, suggests that boaters and anglers prepare the unexpected, such as a sudden storm or something as simple as a loss of balance. Hypothermia is a real concern in water colder than 65° F. Preparations include wearing proper clothing, having an extra set of dry clothes on nearby dry land, and wearing a life jacket. Akins says, “Dress appropriately in layers: wear a base ‘wicking’ layer, a warm ‘insulating’ layer, and a wind layer…don’t forget to also wear a warm hat, gloves and socks.”

The National Water Safety Congress has prepared a video to help prepare for a cold water emergency, including actions such as the 1-10-1 principle to prevent or deal with hypothermia.

THE COLD IS COMING – WHAT SHOULD THE THERMOSTAT BE SET ON IN YOUR LAKE HOME? Many experts recommend a thermostat setting of 50°F for houses left for long periods. This conserves energy while providing a comfortable margin of safety against frozen plumbing. It’s also high enough, in most cases, to prevent condensation from forming and doing damage to furnishings and appliances inside the house.
