The Internal Revenue Service has issued guidelines for keeping records of your gifts to charity. Their newswire issued this week details requirements for obtaining receipts, determining value of donated vehicles, and ensuring charitable organizations are eligible for a tax deduction. The IRS also reminds taxpayers that they must itemize deductions of the Form 1040 Schedule A in order to claim gifts to charity. Filing a 1040A or 1040EZ will not afford you that opportunity.

For more information, see the IRS bulletin. Videos are also available in English, Spanish, and ASL.

The Internal Revenue Service has reminded tax preparers and agents to keep their clients informed of methods used by scam artists to obtain private information. The latest variation involves con artists posing as IRS agents calling to verify information from a tax return, or demanding payment on a fake tax bill.

The IRS reminds taxpayers that they never call about taxes owed without first having mailed you several bills. Also, they will never demand immediate payment over the phone, call or email to verify your identity by asking for personal information, or require you to use a specific payment for your taxes.

For more information and steps to take if you are contacted by someone impersonating an IRS agent, see the IRS consumer alert.
